QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW
The Cambridge CELTA is a Level 5 qualification (UK NQF equivalent) designed for people who have little or no experience in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) but who wish to embark on a career as an EFL teacher. CELTA is a highly practical course designed to provide candidates with the initial skills they need for teaching English to adult students of other languages.
QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE
The course programme includes a minimum of 120 contact hours. Candidates are required to do a total of six hours assessed teaching practice; observe experienced teachers for a minimum of six hours; and maintain and submit a portfolio of all course work including written assignments and materials related to teaching practice.
The course consists of five units of learning:
- Unit 1: Learners and the Learning and Teaching Context
- Unit 2: Language Analysis and Awareness
- Unit 3: Language skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing
- Unit 4: Planning and Resources
- Unit 5: Developing Teaching Skills and Professionalism
ASSESSMENT METHOD
The assessment is continuous and integrated and is divided into two components:
- Planning and teaching
- Classroom-related written assignments
There is no final examination. In order to receive the qualification, you will be expected to show that you have the potential to become a good classroom teacher. This includes qualities such as self-awareness, sensitivity to student, ability to function well as a member of a team. Your will be assessed on your teaching and your assignments. All candidates are required to keep a portfolio.
All courses are externally assessed by Cambridge ESOL to ensure that consistent standards are maintained throughout the UK.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You will need to:
- Be at least 18 years old (20 is recommended)
- Have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables you to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels. Non-Native speakers need to show proof of their level of English which should be C1 and above on the Common European Framework
- Have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and complete the written assignments and assessment of practice teaching
Candidates should have as a minimum entry requirement a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education.
All applicants are required to complete a language task and attend an interview prior to being offered a place on the course.
PLEASE NOTE
Successful candidates will be asked to pay a £300 deposit (non-refundable) to secure their place. Fees must be paid in full before the start of the course.
Funding may be available for this course through your local government.
Applicants who are residents in Wales, and who have experienced, or will experience redundancy, may apply for ReAct funding via the Welsh Assembly Government.
WHAT NEXT?
This qualification is recognised by the British Council and language schools in Britain and abroad. You can also progress to DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults)
